Is a Plunge Pool Worth It? Cost, Value & Benefits

Is It Worth Getting a Plunge Pool?

Let us start with the version of this question people are actually asking.  Not “is a plunge pool a theoretically sound investment in abstract financial terms” — but the real question that shows up when someone is lying awake at night running the numbers: will I actually use it? Will I regret spending this money? Will it change how I feel about my home and my time in it?  We have been manufacturing and delivering plunge pools across Australia for decades. In that time, we’ve spoken to thousands of buyers before, during, and long after installation. This means we know exactly what people worry about before they commit—and what they tell us afterward. So we are going to give you the honest version of this answer, including the cases where a plunge pool might not be worth it for a particular person.  Because the most useful thing we can do is help you make the right decision — not just the one that results in a sale.
What “Worth It” Actually Means  The question of whether something is worth getting is never purely financial. If it were, almost no renovation would clear the bar — kitchens, bathrooms, decking, landscaping, all cost more than they add in raw property value most of the time.  Worth it means: will this genuinely improve the quality of my daily life at a cost I can justify?  With a plunge pool, there are four components to that calculation:
  • The upfront cost
  • The ongoing running costs
  • The lifestyle benefit
  • The property value effect
Let us work through each honestly.
The Upfront Cost: What You Are Actually Paying  Our precast concrete plunge pools start at A$18,283 supply-only for the Celeste — our 2.5m round model with the Economy Equipment Package and Aqualux interior. That is the pool shell, your chosen interior finish, and a full equipment package (pump, chlorinator, filter) pre-plumbed and tested before delivery.  Total installed cost — adding site preparation, crane delivery, plumbing commissioning, and AS 1926.1:2024 compliant safety fencing — typically lands between A$28,000 and A$45,000 for most residential installations.  On the larger end of our range, a fully tiled Astrid (3.35m round, 2,010mm deep) with our Gold Equipment Package, heating, and spa jets is going to be closer to A$50,000–A$65,000 installed. Still significantly less than a comparable swimming pool.
The Ongoing Running Costs: The Number People Forget to Ask  The question we wish more people asked before any pool purchase is not “how much does it cost to install?” but “how much does it cost to run for the next 20 years?”  This is where a plunge pool separates itself decisively from a full-size swimming pool.

Cost Component Plunge Pool (Celeste, 3,527L) Standard Swimming Pool (50,000L)
Electricity (filtration + sanitation) A$15–$30 per month A$80–$200 per month
Chemicals A$20–$50 per month A$80–$200 per month
Annual total estimate A$600–$1,200 A$2,500–$5,000
Over 20 years A$12,000–$24,000 A$50,000–$100,000

Electricity:  The variable-speed pump in our Gold Package is designed to run efficiently on a small volume of water. For a Celeste, typical electricity costs for filtration and sanitation run approximately A$15 to A$30 per month. Even with heating running regularly, a compact plunge pool adds less to a monthly electricity bill than most people expect.
Chemicals:  Chemical costs scale directly with water volume. A 3,527-litre pool uses a fraction of the chlorine, stabiliser, and pH chemicals that a 50,000-litre swimming pool requires. Budget A$20 to A$50 per month for a well-maintained plunge pool.
The bottom line:  The gap in running costs alone — potentially A$26,000 to A$76,000 over 20 years — often justifies the plunge pool choice entirely, independent of any other consideration.
The Lifestyle Benefit: The Part That Actually Determines Worth  You cannot put a number on this one — but you can be honest about it.  A pool of any size is worth having if it genuinely improves the texture of your ordinary days. Not just Christmas Day. Not just when guests visit. Your ordinary Tuesday evenings in February.  Here is what plunge pool owners most consistently tell us about how the pool changes their day-to-day life:
It gets used.  This sounds obvious but it is actually the key insight. Swimming pools are often used rarely — they are large, formal, and require a level of deliberate decision-making that creates friction. A plunge pool in a well-designed backyard gets treated more like a bath or a shower — something you step into on impulse because it is right there, it takes two minutes to enjoy, and it requires almost nothing of you. Owners consistently tell us they use it multiple times a week in summer without even planning to.
It transforms the backyard into a room.  A pool — even a compact one — anchors outdoor living in a way that no other single feature does. It creates a reason to be outside. It creates somewhere for the evening glass of wine, somewhere for kids to cool off, somewhere for guests to gather. Homeowners consistently say that the space around the pool becomes their most-used part of the house.
It is genuinely good for you.  Cold water immersion has a well-documented body of research behind it. Regular use of a cool plunge pool reduces muscle soreness, improves circulation, supports recovery after exercise, and for many people has a measurable effect on sleep quality. If you exercise, spend long days on your feet, or find that heat builds up in your body over a long workday, a plunge pool is closer to a recovery tool than a luxury item.
It simplifies summer.  Anyone who has managed summer heat without a pool and then moved into a home with one understands this immediately. The calculation changes. Kids are not bored and restless — they are in the pool. The temperature inside the house feels more manageable because you have an escape valve. Summer nights become something to look forward to rather than endure.
Is a Plunge Pool Worth It for Property Value?  The research on pool value and property prices in Australia is nuanced. A pool does not automatically add its full cost to a property’s sale price — but in the right property and the right market, it adds more than nothing.  A few things consistently hold true across the Australian property market:
  • Location matters.  In inner-city Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane — where outdoor space is already scarce and a backyard pool is aspirational — a plunge pool adds genuine appeal at sale time. Buyers at this end of the market expect outdoor amenity and will pay for it.
  • Condition and quality matter.  A well-maintained precast concrete pool with a quality tile finish, compliant fencing, and proper equipment adds more than a neglected fibreglass shell. Our pools are manufactured to hold their condition over the long term.
  • The pool must suit the property.  A tightly fitted plunge pool in a townhouse courtyard is a positive — it gives the property something most similar townhouses do not have.
Many of our customers tell us that when they came to sell, the plunge pool was mentioned by buyers and agents as a point of differentiation. It rarely appears as a line item in the valuation — but it consistently appears in conversations about why a particular home sold.
When Is a Plunge Pool NOT Worth It?
  • If your primary use case is lap swimming or competitive fitness:  A plunge pool can support resistance training and hydrotherapy, but if you have a genuine habit of swimming continuous laps and that matters to you, you need a longer pool. Our Aquila at 6 metres is the closest we get — but it is not a lap pool.
  • If your children are at an age where they will genuinely use a larger pool more:  If you have multiple children aged 8 to 15 who will be in the pool every afternoon for the next decade, a larger pool might give them more. A plunge pool is not a paddling pool — our models are proper full-depth concrete pools — but they are not designed for active swimming games the way a 12-metre pool is.
  • If your block has room for a full swimming pool and your budget covers one comfortably:  There is no reason to compromise on size if you do not have to. A plunge pool is the right answer for many buyers — but not necessarily for every buyer.
  • If you are buying primarily to add sale value:  A pool is not the most reliable way to add property value in every market and every price bracket. If financial return is your primary motivation, talk to a property professional before committing.

So — Is It Worth It?  For the overwhelming majority of Australian households, considering it: yes. Genuinely, clearly yes.  Here is why we can say that with confidence.  The people who buy our pools are not buying an abstract lifestyle concept. They are buying something that sits in their backyard and gets used — by them, their families, their guests — on ordinary days in ordinary weeks for decades. The maintenance is manageable. The running costs are real but reasonable. The installation is clean and fast.  What changes when a plunge pool arrives is the relationship between the household and the backyard. It becomes a place people want to be. That is worth more than most renovations deliver.
If you are on the fence, here is the honest test: picture your backyard on a Wednesday evening in January at 7pm. The sun is going down. It has been a hard day. You are home. Now picture stepping into cool water ten steps from your back door. If that image means something to you, the pool is worth it.  What to Think About Before You Buy  If you are moving towards a decision, the questions worth sitting with are:
  • What size suits your yard?  Our sizes guide walks through every model with minimum yard dimensions. The smallest — the Celeste at 2.5m round — fits in a space barely wider than most single-car garages.
  • Above ground or in-ground?  If your yard slopes, is rocky, or you want a faster and lower-cost install, our above-ground option eliminates excavation and suits many sites.
  • Economy or Gold package?  If you want to spend less time on maintenance and more time in the pool, the Gold Package automation is worth the upgrade. If you enjoy managing your pool manually and want to keep costs down, the Economy Package does everything you need.
  • Heating?  A plunge pool without heating is a summer asset in most of Australia. A plunge pool with a heat pump or gas option becomes a twelve-month asset. If you are investing in the pool, heating turns it from seasonal to daily.
  • Finance?  We offer flexible payment options — spread the cost if that makes the decision easier.
